From Connemara and the Aran Islands we travelled on down to County Clare, famous for the Cliffs of Moher.

If you are like me and like to avoid the madding crowd a very well kept secret is to see the unspoiled sight of the Cliffs of Kilkee along the Wild Atlantic Way.

The secret is so well kept that many of my Dublin friends did not know either!

The second stitch or should I say stitches that I am going to explore in this series on symbolism of stitches is the Cable stitch. This is a timeless classic whether in knit clothing or knits for lifestyle in terms of throws & pillows. CABLE & ROPE STITCH

These stitches are the most frequently used stitch in the knitting tradition of an Aran sweater. As shown above cable has many variations. It represents the fishermen’s ropes, the plaited cable further represents the interweaving of family life. Both are a symbol of hope and safety to the fishermen.
